Mercury toning may be a solution (no pun intended!) for you. Try to find a
photographic chemistry book, or technical handbook such as Neblette's, from
the early 1900's and look up some mercury intensification formulas. Another
excellent source would be the British Journal of Photography from the same
period. Mercuric chloride, the principle agent, should be handled VERY
CAREFULLY - using excellent ventilation, a mask (or preferably respirator),
and rubber gloves are strongly recommended.
