I am positive that there is a book in print devoted to the toxic effects
of photochemicals. I cannot recall the author or the title but a good
librarian or bookstore could easily find it in "Books In Print." Also
all chemical suppliers are required by law to supply information on the
toxicity of each compound you purchase from them. It is generally known
that certain substances are dangerous (e.g. mercury vapor, amidol, etc.)
but little attention is paid to the common materials like hypo. I think
that the least one sould do is: make sure the working area is ventilated,
use tongs, wipe up all spills and spashes (keep the area clean), don't
smoke, eat or drink in the working area and if you plan to use a new
substance your are not familiar with, find out about the possible toxic
effects first since additional precatutions like rubber gloves may be
called for.
