My first teacher , a prof. photojournalist , was a bit 'nonchalant' towards the
chemicals for normal b&w processing. To save a print he grabbed the paper out of
the developer by bare hands and so on (at that time he was already a
photographer for more than 25 years ) . I did it also that way , in the
beginning , until after a few years my hands were irritated and after that I
had to stop darkroom work for several month and had to use cortison stuff to
get rid of the
painful and nasty skin reaction with the danger of an overall allergic
reaction; since that time i use a gel to protect my hands and avoid any
direct contact with chemicals.
