I did this many years ago. It seems to me I used a machine that looked
a little like a bulk loader that had two cranks on it. You poured the
developer into it and cranked the film back and forth. As I recall the
film was removed at one point and exposed to white light to reverse the
image. As one proceeded through the various stages there was a lot of
hand cranking involved. The film was dried on a kind of frame that looked
like the ribs of an umbrella. This was 16 mm B&W. About 100 feet at a
time. I have not seen one of these machines for a while. So I don't know
if this helps you other than to know that it can be done.
