I have in hand the latest copy of David Vestal's "Grump" (#41). Some of
you may get this breath of fresh air in a stifling
world, 8 or so pages of wit, wisdom and rueful commentary from the man who
gave us "The Craft of Photography" and "The Art of Enlarging." It costs $20
for 6 issues, "published informally and occasionally," but generally I'd
say every 6 to 8 weeks. (David Vestal, PO Box 309, Bethlehem, CT 06751-0309)
Those who have seen the issue can skip what follows, for others, on the
chance that someone can help I quote a section:
help wanted (he writes)
Back in 1960 and '61 I photographed in Brazil. Now I finally have time to
print those photos and write text of a book ... I must go back to Brazil
to identify people & places; to this end I will apply for a Fulbright to
Brazil in 1996. I'm told it will improve my chance...if I produce
invitations to teach or lecture or exhibit [in Brazil]. However, I long
ago lost touch with people I knew there .... I am also "off line." If you
are on the Internet...I'd be grateful if you'd put out a question about
the people on this list....The Fulbright application must be in by August
1, 1995 ....places and affiliations [to follow] all from 1961:
[Requesting present addresses/info for following people]:
1. Rodrigo Mellow Franco de Andrade (Ministry of Education, etc. Rio)
2. Carybe (painter, Salvador-Bahia)
3. Euler Americano da Costa (journalist for A Tarde, SaLvador-Bahia)
4. Lucio Costa (architect, city planner, with the Patrimonio, Rio)
5. Orlandinho Seitas Fernandes (director, Museu da Inconfidencia, +
Patimonio, Ouro Preto)
6. Fernando Markan (Varig pr, Rio)
7. Paulo Muniz (Life photographer, Rio)
8. Lew Parella (worked with museums, Rio & Sao Paulo)
9. Joao Rezende (columnist for O Globo, Rio)
10. Abelardo Rodigues (art collector, with Patrimonio, Recife)
End of quote.
David is a prince among men, not to mention
photographer, teacher, commentator and generous sharer of vast store of
info and Brazil should implore him to grace their shores, Fulbright
should beg him to accept awards, etc. etc. He also to my utter amazement
and gratitude once retrieved from whatever incredible filing
system he has devised an article on POTA by Marilyn Levy from its
original publication 30 years previously & mailed it to me (a casual
teaching colleague, not close friend)
when I was whining about not finding the original formula in Dignan ....
among numerous other acts of informational philanthropy and photo-lore
transmission -- a one-man resource. Hope someone can help.
