Rod - I think you worry to much. I would not use hairspray on a
historic negative (cultural property) but, as a working photographer,
would not hesitate for one second to use it on a contemporary negative
of my own, originals included. I suspect that cleaning the negative
would be far more traumatic to the emulsion than the hairspray.
