Up Glyoxal!

Ordered glyoxal 40% from Fisher Scientific, catalog # AC 15622-5000.
(Phone 1/800-766-7000)

Cost $11 for 500 cc. Plus $7 delivery. I had to charge it to my school,
not for "control" reasons, but book keeping. Fisher wouldn't take my
credit card or even let me send a check. I could, I gather, have opened an
account, however.......

I divided gelatined paper into two batches, hardened one in glyoxal as per
Mike's instructions (for 1% solution) which came out to 25 cc of the 40%
solution per litre of water. (I didn't subtract the 25 cc from the litre,
but this isn't rocket science.)

There was a recognizable "formaldehyde"-type odor, but quite mild, and
gone when paper (hung outdoors) was dry.

For the "control" with formaldehyde I had to decide whether to use my
usual 15 cc per litre, or same 25cc per litre (as is recommended in some
books, not others). Decided for "science" to use the 25 cc. Must here
take back everything I said about the formaldehyde not being so bad
outdoors. It was a very still, hot day, & I thought I'd faint. SO GLAD IT
WAS THE LAST TIME. THANK YOU MIKE & JOHN! (Odor still noticeable in the
dry paper next day, too.)

And the good news is -- samples of two of the 3 papers I did stain
test on (using a very stainish ultramarine blue) developed whiter with
the glyoxal. Yes, whiter than white!! A third paper was about the same.(The
possibility remains that the weaker solution of formaldehyde would have
stained less, but I don't feel the need to find that out.)

Thought of bringing my leftover formaldehyde to the morgue. (Though maybe
they're switching to Glyoxal, too.)

Happy Monday to all,

Judy
