Since most of what I do now is tri-color gum, multiple coatings are a
given going in. Depending on the subject matter and the effect I'm
trying to achieve (and a lot, an awful lot, of guesswork), I decide
what color to start with and which of two differeent tones of it to
use.
When I have done regular gum, without separation negs, I've tried to
keep the number of coatings down - ideally two, one for the primary
image, the other to bring out the key elements of the image - but I've
not had much experience here and others can provide much better advice.
