Hard water is usually measured as the amount of CaCO3 (calcium carbonate)
in your water. There are simple kits that you can buy that can perform
simple analysis of your water. In many places water treatment companies
offer free water analysis, although they seem to always come up with the
suggestion that your need two to three thousand dollars of equipment to
obtain "better" softer water, which btw, tastes awful!
