Hello everyone I have just had the pleasure of joining the list to find to
my surprise as assistant editor, a great deal of interest in our little
DTP magazine The Alternative Photographic Review. As Peter Marshall states
the current issue may not have such an appeal as it is concerned with
topics already covered fully by members of this list Strange as it may seem
there are numerous other Photo alt workers who do not know of the
existence this list, or just cant afford a computer even if they do,I have
a number of students in this very position,but a subscription of =A310 a yea=
r
is feasible, and of course there are the cyberphobes who poor creatures also
need their share of enlightenment.
We are at present a small one man and a dog outfit, Keith Dugdale does all
the work and I go round Woofing and growling trying to drum up support, in
the form of subscription and contribution. So please if anyone would like to
make a written contribution in the form of an article, poem ,a joke, some
interesting new information, or help our Dennis out with some new material
for his ramblings you will all be most welcome. We are an informal friendly
lot and intend to keep it that way, there is little room on our pages for
experts whose only wish is to polish there egos. However if there is a
genuine desire to share information with us, and to offer help when and how
they can, then we urgently need this contribution. Keith
Dugdale hopes to bring the APR online early in the new year, then everybody
will be able to contact us directly, but in the mean time, I will relay any
communication to Keith by fax, so should anyone wish to contact us you
have a fast open line.
Now to the gum strip saga ,which is in fact a strong brown manila paper
tape with a smooth finish on one side and coated with stationary gum on the
other. I am afraid that I do not know the exact constituent of gum ,it
could be that vile pretender, gloy, or on the other hand it maybe one of
the many forms of the generic Gum Arabic such as,
kodofan,Nigerian,Sengalese,or an Australian variety.I have already learnt
to my cost one has to be very careful when describing gum.
Gum strip was the precursor of the modern plastic parcel tape which is in
many ways its superior ,but gum strip still reigns supreme for some
applications such as quality bespoke picture framing ,and is also employed
as a standard stretching technique by Watercolour Artists to improve the
stability of thin paper and to avoid uneven expansion and cockling when
laying down washes of colour. The classic Gum-Bichromate process has
employed the same method of working for similar reasons for a great many
years. I am most surprised that Judy Siegel or Peter Marshall have never
heard of it.
