I think the usual number of layers around
1900's was 3-6, and some even did up to 15--which is certainly not
necessary....
At one point Anderson boasted of having done 23... (Tho his basic advice was 3 -- slightly different blacks for 3 exposures, long for highlights, medium for midtones and darkest for darks.)
