However even so, would not society look unfavorably upon
anyone who failed to admit upfront that the original
photographer was someone else?

I have no problem with printing someone elses work if that
is clearly stated, but the wrath of history can be
ruthless if ones deception beomes public knowledge... 

and to be sure, someone, somewhere WILL eventually say
something!

No, I dont think anyone should take credit for anyones
elses work... even by ommission.

Yes, it is nice to keep alive the excellent work of others
as long as there is no copyright infringement, noone is
hurt and no deception is involved.

Why not?
