FWIW, 

I've only used the beta version of Lightroom but it would not open a 300 MB
RGB 16 bit TIFF file on my PC with 2G of memory, nor would a trial version
of LightZone. At least Lightroom was well behaved enough to tell me that not
enough memory was available while LightZone mindlessly went into la-la land.
PS CS has no problems with the same files.

Hi Eric,

I've seen comments like yours regarding beta versions but I don't find that
in the current product version. My TIFFs are most frequently 200-400MB but I
haven't experienced any difficulty with them. I'm actually pretty impressed
by how fast it can handle files of that size...
