RE: Hardening With Glyoxal: One Shot?
Kerik, Thanks for the tip! I don't know why I didn't think of that. "So easy a caveman can do it." This sounds like an optimum way to size for gum over platinum! Thanks once again. Don, It's easy. Put the drops of hardener in a shot glass, squirt in the required amount of sizing using a pipette or syringe, swirl it around a bit and you're good to go. I apply the sizing with a glass rod. Works like a charm and (for me) is quicker, easier and much less messy than other sizing methods I've tried. Michael, Nope! Once the gelatin cools and hardens the mix cannot be re-used. Chris Anderson notes on page 44 of her book 'Alternative Processes Condensed', that Kerik Kouklis adds 6 drops of formalin to 10 ml of size to cover a 14x17 area. Perhaps this would work with glyoxal also, though I'm not clear how Kerik is able to mix the hardener uniformly in such a small volume of gelatin.
