Does the Phenidone break down at a certain temperature? I took the first
batch (Mytol) and heated to 140F and that helped a lot.

You won't need to heat it very much. I use a
magnetic stirrer and the phenidone is in solution
way before the glycol gets up to 100ºF.
Ethylene glycol will probably work just as well, but I won't swear to it.
