Another way to vary the distance is by gluing small round washer to the bottom of a plain piece of glass that fits over the scanner glass. You can find washer of this type at hardware stores from 0.25mm up to well over 2mm. However, Doug Fisher's mounting station is a good value in my estimation for the Epsons 4990, V700 and V750. You can also use it on a number of other scanners. For example, I use it on my Scitex EverSmart Pro scanner. The oil mount station sold by Creo Kodak for the EverSmart sells for over $1000, so at $60 the Fisher mounting system saves more than a little money. If you have never tried fluid mounting you should give it a try. It won't improve sharpness (that is a product of the lens and CCD), but it will improve micro-contrast, reduce the appearance of grain, and eliminate small spots and scratches on the negative.
