Peter Henry Emerson's 'Naturalistic Photography' is an interesting read, especially if you add in the historical tidbits surrounding it such as his later renunciation of his own book! Another interesting read is 'Pictorial Effect in Photography' by Henry Peach Robinson. This are both available in facsimile editions.

A side issue is why the name Henry was so popular in the 19th century.
