Just to add another factoid about this phenomena,
quite a few years ago there was an article describing this in Scientific
American Amateur Scientist column; which if you can find it is worth reading.

Yes, it is called the "triboelectric" effect.
You can also get quite a light show crunching wintergreen lifesavers in the
dark for the same reason.
