Re: How many layers of gum is too many?
The other day I did a couple attempts where the color just stuck to the
paper. I really had to attack the paper with a brush during developing
just to get any image at all. I had done curve tests, so I think it must
be something about how I applied the emulsion, or the consistency, or
amount of pigment, or the consistency of the sizing, or...? I did try
the same neg on another paper, and had pretty good results. I'm
switching papers for now!
Something that happened tonight was the emulsion got very bubbly. I
thought it might be a cool effect, since the image is supposed to
represent water, but I discovered that you can have too many bubbles.
The areas with too many bubbles just flake off. Is it my imagination, or
do some pigments bubble more than others? This was Payne's gray.
I did use your suggestion once tonight...I got some streaks I didn't
like in the coating, so I washed it right off.

Hi Laura
It will still brush off after exposure. The emulsion is very fragile.
Leave the work you have an issue with and do a test or two, that should
reassure you.
What issues are you having?

Thanks, good to know.
Unfortunately, I usually only have issues *after* exposure...

Hi Laura
If you stretched and sized your paper another layer will be fine. I've
made
prints with up to nine layers. If you have an issue with the fourth layer
you can always wash it off with a hose or brush.

I've done 3, but I really think it needs one more. Scary, 'cause it
looks pretty good so far. Will something happen if there are too many
layers?
