hi jeremy,
same problem here. i use chrome alum instead of the aldehydes. the 
hardening process takes longer, but it's a powerful hardener too and no 
obnoxious fumes. the solution has a slight purple colour, but it's not 
noticeable, unless you're using a very thick layer.
i use about 0,3gr for 100m of 5% gelatin.
