Anti-oxidants had the reputaion of preventing cancer, but (not so) recent research could not prove that, and most recent research actually showed that anti-oxidants (under certain coditions) at least in the lab when cultering human cells can even cause cancer..(recent Nature paper I recall)..

One problem with all sorts of nutritional aids, or whatever you want to call them, is that they do not survive the human digestive system. Also, I wonder about anti-oxidants in the body. The assumption is that oxidation is bad, we all know what rust is, but the system of delivring oxygen to the cells is all based on the oxidation of the blood and reduction at the cells. This all comes from so much ignorance of chemistry and physiology.
