It is the final volume that matters.
In most cases in alt it does not make that much difference although it is better to get in right.
There is an old rule about manuals which is don't believe a word of it until you have tested it.
My favourite manual, 'Keepers of Light', starts one recipe with the necessary materials in pounds and gallons and the gives the recipe in grammes to three places of decimals !

Thanks Terry!
Yes, I am aware of the percentage solutions. I was just wondering if it is
important to make the final volume to 25 ml (only Sullivan/Weese mentioned
"water to make 25 ml"), or should I dissolve the chemicals to 25 ml (so the
total volume would be a bit larger). But I guess, as I've learned from you guys,
they are normally talking about final volumes in photographic formulas...

A standard solution is the amount of the material to be dissolved made up to the
total amount with water. The recognised way of expressing it is in terms of
percentage solutions. If you take 20 g of something and add water to make 100
ml that is a 20 % solution (which is what you get if you make 5 g up to 25 ml).
This way you will get consistency and avoid confusion.

Hello List,
I'm hoping to mix my first Ziatype solutions tomorrow. I have one basic
question:
I've been reading my three sources for Ziatype: The New Platinum Print by
Sullivan & Weese, Alt. Proc. Condensed by Chris Anderson, and Alternative
Photographic Processes (second edition) by Christopher James. They tell you to
mix your stuff with 25 ml water, only Sullivan & Weese say: water *to make* 25
ml (the final volume)...
So, should I take 25ml water and dissolve into that, or dissolve into a smaller
quantity and fill up to 25 ml... or does it really matter?
regards,
Jalo
