Err, they were using it to keep their mixed paint a little longer actually -
methinks.
FWIW, the (few) prints I've done (incl. tests) - w/o using any preservative
- are still in fine condition after 5-6 years in the hot & humid Istanbul
climate... (Mean 30C, RH 60-70% in the summer.)

BTW, thinking over, I don't believe all of those Egyptian, or middle-age (or
- even - "pre-historic") painters - who were using tempera paint - were
putting any biocide in their paint. And (most of) their works are still in
good shape, no?
