haven't had a feeling that the glue I use was adding tooth to the paper, for
instance...

How about mixing in a little silica fume? (AEROSIL 200 / 300 and similar.)
I'm pretty sure this will add some tooth...

Would a PVA size improve the "tooth" of a paper ?. I have this big batch of
Van Gelder Simili Japon paper which I use for Pt printing, but that paper is
quite smooth an does not work very well with gum.
