This is the method I was shown in my teens nearly
sixty years ago. I think it was derived originally from
"Dynamic Symmetry"; while that theory has been pretty much
invalidated some of its rules do often result in pleasing
visual effects. The method shown works most of the time but
I find does fail for some images particularly where the matt
is significantly larger than the print. I have also found
that certain images work best when mounted off-center as in
magazine layout presentation.
