Graeme, it's Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, it's a very effective
iron chelant. It has many form, we mainly use its disodium salt (gives
an acidic solution - used right after developer bath...) or
tetrasodium salt (gives an alkali solution - used later in the
processing work flow, right before final wash...)
