Yeah compare a couple of different surfaces.

However, the best Dmax doesn't necessarily give you the best print or presentation.

I chose fine semi-matte surface with a Dmax of 2 or slightly above over glossy 
with higher Dmax. In practical display environment, Dmax above 2 doesn't really 
add much. In order to appreciate high density, you need bright illumination and 
careful control (avoidance) of reflection.

But then many people here practice processes where Dmax of 1.5 is considered 
really good.
