Thank you so much, Roger.  That's really very helpful. 

I know I must sound like one of these people who really wants to know this stuff for herself, but fabricates this "friend" who is turning away from the rigor (and good pay) of micro-surgeon for that of pt/pd printer-- but it's actually true (well, this time).  And since I really have zero experience wielding scalpels, blades, or shivs-- I did want to find out if people actually do this sort of thing-- and, if so, how they might go about it-- if there was some special trick to it.

But given the information gleaned here, I am going to try it myself.  If all goes well, I might start printing images again that include the sky.  

I appreciate all the good advice.
