Actually I was sort of jokeing when I suggested a carbon arc for an
enlarger light source. Cabron arcs do produce a lot of UV, in fact,
there is an old carbon arc in our Art Dept. that one of our faculty
uses for photo silk screen. Nevertheless, I would think that as an
enlarger light source it would certainly "fry" the negative. It would
be difficult to remove the IR and not the UV, but I suppose it might
be possible. The other problem is that ordinary glass absorbs UV, so
you would have to have an enlarger lens made of pure quartz and for that
matter the condenser lens would also have to be made of quartz. That
could get very costly.
