A couple of weeks back there was some discussion, misinformation (and
disagreement) about the nature of Kentmere papers. From past experience
Kentmere are very responsive to those using their products and only too
willing to help. I passed some of the list comments to them and hope their
verbatim response below is of interest.

"Dear John

Thank you for your time on Friday explaining the Alternative Processes
discussion group and the Internet.

I have produced the following information to try and answer/remove some of the
speculation within the discussion group. Please feel free to edit it as you see
fit, I sometimes tend to get too involved in my explanations.

The Kentmere Art Document ( Luminos SW-Art ) is the only NON-SUPERCOATED
conventional B & W Photographic paper that Kentmere Limited manufacture.

Most of the Kentmere Kentint range of papers are non-supercoated (Ivory and
Silver are supercoated), but these papers have pigments incorporated in the
emulsion and are designed for high contrast display work such as black lettering
on a coloured background.

The surface of the Kentmere Art Document was changed in 1992 from batch number
7506. Because of the way this paper base is manufactured, in its early days the
surface did have quite pronounced indentations. The felts that are used to give
the surface pattern have become smoother with use, the indentations are no
longer as pronounced on current production. Some time in the future the felts
will need to be replaced and the indentations will increase.

Staveley is a small village in the English Lake District. Hopefully Kentmere
will soon be on-line so we do't have to snail it.
