This stinks! Another freeloader no doubt. We'd have to compare notes to see
if it is the same guy who complained to *me* and blamed *me* because his
university put their copy of my Encyclopedia in their Reference book dept.
In the reference dept he actually has to put his hand in his pocket and
take some money out to buy a special card with which he can xerox anything
he wants. This costs him money...
If my book were not in the Reference dept, he could take it to his office
where he can copy anything for "free", cover to cover (although I am pretty
sure taxpayers would not agree with this definition of "free"). And I am
getting the blame for writing books that end up in Reference departments!
I'll start writing Arlequin romances anyday now;-)
I am not making this up. This is why I was not entirely surprised that
someone would actually abuse a listowner because of some Internet problem.
There are plenty of arrogant freeloaders out there.
So back to my original subject line with hopefully, something positive to say:
Gold prints & golden handshakes...
Now that Steve has announced his "retirement", while he still has a few
hair left to pull out, it may be time for those of us who have benefited
significantly from this list, to say thank you in a meaningful way. By
this, I don't mean sending 500 messages with a "Thank you Steve" on the
subjet line.
Not everybody is in a position to do this of course, but I take the liberty
of suggesting to those who can that perhaps they could send a nice little
Alt-photo print to Steve, along with a few kind words. Those who
write/publish books also know what they can do... This may just compensate
a little bit for the hundreds of hours of thankless work he has had to do
because we were often too lazy to learn how to use the listserv properly.
So, while we can't help him with his mortgage, we can at least fill up a
part of his living room wall with prints that have been produced around the
world and which perhaps would not exist had it not been for the list he
started.
On this, as in other matters, please make sure that private messages are
sent to individuals only, i.e., not through the list.
