Collodion
The main point of danger in terms of the explosions was in the nitration of
the cotton - which can be avoided by buying collodion. It is still flammable
and liable to make you pass out.
It was still available commercially a few years ago - I haven't checked
recently. Nor did I get it to work photographically.
