As the British Journal of Photography last week was extolling the virtues of
both the Alternative Photographic Review and this list in an article called
'Exposing the Past'. I am posting the following to the list as the current
erudite members may wish to pass some of the information on. The information
here is in reply to questions from numbers of people on the list and some of it
results directly from the list itself. For example there has been a request
lately for a workshop on traditional carbon printing. Is there any body else who
would be interested.

The following format accords, so far as I am aware ,with Steve's
recommendations.

ALTERNATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPSWORKSHOPS

paper.

GUM PRINTING
GUM PLATINUM PRINTING
SPARROWS GREEN, EAST SUSSEX
By kind agreement with Robert Dowling

13 & 14 JULY AND
20 & 21 JULY
Cost including accommodation, food and materials, 220 POUNDS for each weekend or
400 POUNDS

On the first week-end we will take or make large format photographs and print
them as multi-colour gum prints.
On the second week-end will combine gum printing with platinum printing.

PHOTOGRAVURE
LONDON ( KENTISH TOWN )

22,23,24,25 & 26 JULY
10 AM TO 4.30
Cost 85 POUNDS, maximum 12 people

Materials, to achieve one photo-gravure, included.
This is the most challenging and the most satisfying of the alternative
photographic processes.
A carbon print is made from a film positive. The print is transferred to
aquatinted copper which is
etched through the carbon and the aquatint to produce bite of differing depths
depending on the
thickness of the gelatine in the carbon print. The deeper the bite, the deeper
the tint. The plate is then
used to print an edition of a continuous tone image with the subtlety of a
platinum/palladium print. Last
year this workshop was so successful that people were producing more than one
gravure during the
week.

BROMOIL & GUM
FLORENCE, i. e. FIRENZE, ITALIA.
14,15,16 SEPTEMBER

Cost about 110 POUNDS or 265,000 LIRE to include materials but not
accommodation although inexpensive accommodation can be arranged.. Maximum 12
people.
This workshop is aimed at professional photographers, teachers and well informed
amateurs
in the Florence area but people from outside the area and abroad are welcome..
It will be
conducted in a mixture of Italian and English. The idea of the workshop will be
to practise
bromoil and gum printing in parallel over the three days.
