I too, like William Patterson, have found Phil Davis's BTZS both extremely
rational and extremely helpful. Phil ,as you probably know , has revamped the
entire zone system and has made any number of major modifications including the
use of a pocket computer and fairly precise film testing computer based
methodology . Now I hate film testing and I am not a detail person at all but I
have to tell you that on a recent 10 week trip to northern India with my 7x17
inch camera and in making 400 exposures of not FP4+ but HP5+ film , I have
never had such a good yield of negatives exposed for platinum / palladium in
my life. My density ranges are right on target in spite of the fact that the
lighting conditions were absolutely awful and varied from hot Himalayan sun at
altitude, to dimly lit monasteries. All in all , Phil's system held up and
proved its merit and is in my opinion one of the great innovations to
photography in this century If it is true that actions speak louder than
words, then my 400 negatives bear living testimony to this. I wholeheartedly
recommend the BTZS System of Photography to anyone interested . Fred Neumann at
