Since I use 35 mm (as do 99% of my students), zone system is not
relevant... Although I understand Carson Graves has written a book "Zone
System for 35 mm" with a new edition due early next year, which I will
certainly look for (retaining my skepticism until proved otherwise, of
course).

Here's a possible why-not: With Zone System so widely revered, it's often
the first stop for newbies (and others) wanting to get a handle on
"real" photography. When I meet them in non-silver class they are so
traumatized, in effect having had a crash course in aversion therapy, it
takes some bullying (and Prozac) to get them to hold a 21-step.

Then, after they've been allowed to ventilate, soothed, clucked over, and
persuaded to think about what I'm showing them -- the 21-step to read both
print and negative (as explained in these pages last month) -- you can see
the light go on, the relief palpable, even joy, and words to the effect
"it's like magic."

However, maybe for working in the field, the BTZS hand-held computer is a
splendid tool. It certainly sounds good, and certainly the name is
excellent -- "BTZS hand-held PC" (is that it?).
