gold toning of POP, salt prints and albumen prints is used to enhance the
image colour and the permanence of these prints. untoned prints have a
brick red colour. Gold toned prints change to a cooler brown to purple
colour depending on toning time and formula. A good reference to look up
with detailed answers to these questions is "Care and Identification of
19th Century Photographic Prints" Kodak Publication G25, by James M.
Reilly.

However, tone the prints *before* fixing them.
Processing of silver print out papers is as follows:

1. expose, print should look too dark as it lightens up with processing.
2. wash to remove excess silver chloride. approximatley 10 minutes, The
wash water should remain clear (all trace of milkiness wil be gone when
properly washed.
3.tone, pick your formula, there are many to choose from.
4.fix, in plain hypo
5. hypo clear
6. wash.
