I'll back you up on this... It is ten times more work that most people
think. In my case it is probably worst because I am a history
"aficionadeau" and I like to cover patents and original texts in at least
the three languages that have been used the most to cover the first 100
years of photography. I still have 5 to 10 years of work ahead of me as
planned at this time. Besides the new books and translations in progress,
all my existing books are continuously being revised. Some, e.g., Pt book,
more often than others. It takes years, lots of feedback and 2 or 3
editions before anything is fairly "definitive".

I think you'll find most of the "pros" on this list already very busy. At
least one signed off recently so he'd have more time finishing his book.
This, of course, is not to say nobody else can do anything decent. Indeed
it may be a good exercice.
