Sometime back I promised to post details of two events in New York City in
October. What follows first is from Dieu Donn=E9 Papermill News Letter. The
second session seems particularly appropriate for people on the alt-photo
list.

Event 1.

On Wed, 23 October, the Dieu Donn=E9 Papermill Inc. (433 Broome Street, New
York, NY 10013-2622; Telephone: 212-226-0573; Fax: 212-226-6088; e-mail:
ddpaper@yorick.ny.cybernex.net) will sponsor a symposium on Paper and Paper
Art in the Great Hall at Cooper Union. The Symposium will gather artists,
papermakers, educators, museum curators, librarians, sutdents and others to
share ideas and experiences related to hand papermaking and paper art. A
focus will be on the growth of hand papermaking during the past two decades
and to document the importance of paper art as a 20th century phenomenon.

The 10:00-12:00 session is The Art of the Matter: Dialogues between Master
Papermakers and Artists. The panel discussion will help define the trends
of collaboration in paper art and clarify the contributions made by both
the papermaker and the artist.

The 2:00-4:30 session is Fine Paper:Support or Art? The moderator will
facillitate a lively and provocative round table discussion touching on
issues of collaboration between printers, artists, papermakers, and
bookmakers; the importance of paper art relative to other media; how works
of art in or on paper are cuarted, exhibited, collected, and preserved; and
how works of art in or on paper are viewed by the art world in general.

Registration for non-members is $65 before 15 Aug and $75 afterwards.

Event 2.

The 15th annual meeting of the Friends of Dard Hunter will be on Thursday -
Saturday, 24-26 October. The organization is concerned with ALL ASPECTS
of handmade paper - from history and curating; to paper art and books; to
paper as a surface to put all sorts of things on-including alternative
photography images and many other images. Unreservedly I can say that the
=46riends of Dard Hunter are the most interesting people I run into each
year, and the organization has these annual meetings which are not only
well organized, but REALLY interesting. This year there are fewer talks
and more tours. I can supply more information if anyone wants it. The
registration before 20 August is $150; $165 after. Membership is required
- $25 per year.
