If you're anywhere near perth, you should try and
visit Jill Smith and Phil Dench. They do amazing
stuff with scanning, 3D output, and ceramic
type printing. Phil has also written some
execellent software to deal with all this stuff.

They were involved with some very intresting
projects with MIT that did 3D printing using
ceramic fibers and ink jets.
Anyone else intrested in the methods for printing/exposing
color surfaces on 3D objects?
