I've made my coating rods from acrylic plastic for a couple of years and
its great. Doesn't scratch, is easy to make (much easier than working with
glass) is cheaper and doesn't break when I, the darkroom klutz, knock it
off of something something soft onto something hard (never works the other
way around!) Since the rod only touches paper fiber it doesn't scratch so
it works just like glass; the only caveat is to make sure you check the rod
ends for any splinters or nicks which would scratch the paper; a swipe of
220 grit knocks 'em right off.
