This is a laboratory/production course dealing with the history and
practice of 19th century photographic printing. These historic printing
methods offer the photographer an alternative to contemporary black and
white printing methods which have been designed for manufacturing
efficiency or darkroom convenience. This course will provide the student
with an insight into the unique possibilities of tonal range and image
quality of traditional handmade photographic papers.
The student will have the opportunity to produce prints in silver such as
albumen and salted paper prints, iron prints such as cyanotype and
kallitype, or prints using platinum and palladium metals. These are
contact processes requiring a negative as large as the desired final image.
Students will be instructed in methods to produce negatives suitable for
the printing process they wish to explore.
Only a limited number of printing processes per student can be
addressed in any one session. This course is limited to a maximum of 16
students.
Supplies Needed: Approximately $100 - $200 depending on process(s) chosen
Cost of required chemistry (excluding platinum and palladium) is
included in the Material Fee. For material safety, chemistry will be
controlled and distributed by the instructor.
