I have a handfull of formulas for Uranium toning and have done a fair amount
of this. Most formulas produce beautiful shades of brown more like chocolate
brown than sepia, but I have one very, very old formula that mostly will
produce blue tones like an iron toner but occasionally will produce split
tones of bright blue in the highlights and various shades of brown in the
shadows. I have tried to track down what causes it to do this but have not
to date been successful. I have one split-tone silver print made with this
toner which won an award in a regional art show. Its marked "AP" because
I have yet to be able to reproduce it. It is at least 5 years old and shows
no sign of change. I too, have read that Uranium toning is unstable, but
have yet to see any evidence of it.
