Dick,

I am not a chemist but I do have some knowledge of the field having taken
severa; courses in chemistry including nuclear chemistry. I would like to offer
a few comments. First, Uranyl or Uranium Nitrate is much more dangerous
than silver nitrate. It can be absorbed through the skin and produces
liver damage amoung other things. I know this because I checked into it
before beginning my experiments with uranium toners a few years back. I do
not believe that enexperienced persons should work with this compound without
being thoroughly warned. I would be careful around barium compounds and
potassium chlorate will oxidize very rapidly when mixed with anything
organic and heated or ignited. I found that out in high school chem lab.
All of these things are the reasons why chemical companies won't sell
certain compounds to anyone other than professionals. Their motive may
be to protect people from dangerous substances but I suspect that the
real reason is that they fear lawsuits. If I were you, before I sold
some of these substances, I would check with a lawyer as to how you can
protect yourself. Like you, I would hate to see the government telling
us what we can and cannot do all the time but sometimes it is necessary.
After all one cannot easily purchase dynamite. However, glycerin, sulfuric
acid and nitric acid are fairly easy to come by should one be so foolish
as to try to make thier own. Recently, I have come to believe that there
should be some regulation of ammonium nitrate.
