No question is silly if you need an answer !

As metallic silver is trapped in gelatine to make a picture, dry pigment is
trapped in the gum. In general insoluble dry pigment is best for gum
prints. In fact pigment is by definition insoluble.

I am pursuing the bromoil paper point. I want some more myself.
