I agree with the tenor of what you say. I seem to remember that I gave the
example of someone who apologised for writing a long letter because they
had not had time to write a short one.

Helpful advice that I intend to heed even if I was received through an
unintentional eavesdrop.
The 'theory' business arose through some comments I made arising out of UK
experience, In fact a one line aside. It still rumbles on.
