Inkjet printers

This is vaguely off-topic, but I'm looking for any advice from anyone who
has tried to print photos from a colour inkjet onto watercolour or other
"alternative" papers.
I'm doing a project that requires me to buy a low-end inkjet to
print a couple hundred images. There is such a dizzying array of cheap
printers available, each making dazzling claims about clarity and colour
fidelity. Unfortunately, I don't have time to test each one myself -- and
staff at places like Future Shop are notoriously un-accomodating.
Especially when you're spending less than $500 Cdn.
Does anyone have any experience feeding paper like Rives or Arches
into the following:
Epson 600 (or 800)
Canon (240 or 4550)
Apple colour stylewriter 2500
HP Deskjet (650 or other)
Mostly I'm wondering whether the images are as crisp as might be expected
with ordinary bond paper, or whether they become a blotchy mess.
Archival-ness is always a concern, but alas, cost is a bigger one.

The files will be output from a Mac using Photoshop.

Thanks
