Gender & ther list??

Hello!

This style thing is crazy. The amount of e-mail on this subject on this
list has overshadowed the intent of this list. I live in the United States.
Its my understanding this is a free country. If you are male and want to
use he, his, and him exclusively, you have every right. If you are female
and want to right she, her and hers you should have that right as well.
There are a lot of more important things to be offended by. If I read an
article I often see the feminine references and I can assume, if I like,
that it was written by a female. But I can't understand either way why I
should care if that author used he or she. I honestly can't conceive of why
or what the reader would be offended by?

I guess if the article was about the reader and it referred to them as "he"
but that person was a she, then I can understand. But that would not be
offensive, just incorrect.
