graphics program for Mac

Dear computer graphics mavens,

Today, urgently desiring a grid on a transparency (like graph paper) for a
gum print, I turned to my old graphics program, even though I knew it
wouldn't work with System 7.5, and I was right. Silicon Beach has
apparently gone to software heaven, along with all my other good old
software makers (or old, good software makers).

Can anyone suggest a SIMPLE graphics program for the Mac? I don't want to
turn a photograph into a painting, or vice versa, and my experience is
that these superduper programs blow you off if you only want to do
something plain -- say, print a grid, like making graph paper. I have not
yet installed Pagemaker System 6.5 (one can bear only so much at a time),
but as I recall it has no patterns, nor does Photo Shop.

I tried the Claris works graphics program bundled with the Mac, actually
getting it to print a grid, albeit against its better judgement. But it
didn't have the flexibility. Wouldn't make the size I needed.

While I was there, though, I tried the Claris Works data base, my old data
base for mailing labels having also been trashed by system 7.5. I couldn't
make this one scale & arrange its fields, and the (ha!) documentation was
mum on the topic. If anyone can suggest a SIMPLE data base for the Mac I'd
be grateful for that too. (It's amazing how many GREAT BIG programs won't
do a simple thing, like a selected sort, or a variable size label. I mean
there's a space for your paper salesman's CEO's birthday, but no way to
print only a selection, let alone a complicated one.)

I've looked for but not found other programs via books and magazines. I
have a Web address for shareware, but haven't been there yet. In any
event, my experience is it all SOUNDS great & full of promise until you
try to make it go -- you need a recommendation from a user. Hope
there's one out there...

If this seems offtopic (though I plan it for gum printing, others might
not), please reply offlist...

TIA,

Judy
