Back in college we used to tone Van Dyke prints with Lead Acetate (not
very healthy to play with, but if you must...) - 5gm to 100 ml H2O, used
warm. It gives very deep blacks...
I believe you may also get interesting tones with Tannic Acid, as per
cyanotypes, but I'm not sure.
