Crawley's FX-1 and/or someone's FX-2 I know naught of. But soot &
chalk, yes! The earliest use of this phrase known to me comes from
Ansel Adams. He spoke of choices of film/chemistry/papers which
resulted in prints which slammed the shadows into utter darkness and
sent the highlights to a white death. Simply put, no shadow detail,
no elegant high values.

Oversimplified too much, this means the photographer overcooked the
pasta and burned the sauce!

As for going back to shooting color? Address me off-list!
